Doing the Work: A Space for White People Working Against Racism

January 21, 2021 @ 18:00 - 19:30 CET

Virtual Event Virtual Event
Free – 100kr

Doing the Work is a commitment to being vulnerable and learning from others. Each week we discuss a different topic in order to confront prejudices and harmful structures which support and reinforce racism in the Norwegian society.

Doing the Work: Cultural Appreciation vs. Appropriation

Culture influences how we dress, what we eat and the art that goes up on our wall. Sharing culture is great, and we can learn so much from each other through our cultures. But sharing and taking are not the same.  How can we tell the difference between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation? What are the consequences when we are not aware of the distinction?

Come to our session to learn about the distinction, pick apart examples, and bring your questions about that kimono hanging in your closet.
